Buying Guide

There are countless training whistles on the market, but they are not all equally effective. Consider this list of features and factors before making your purchase.

  • Ease-of-use: Training your dog requires time, patience and practice. You’re likely to use your whistle constantly, so choose one with a comfortable mouthpiece that is easy to blow.
  • Volume: If you plan on using an audible whistle, choose one with a commanding sound but ensure that you and your dog can tolerate it. Inaudible whistles emit an ultrasonic sound that travels long distances, which is appropriate for outdoor training.
  • Frequency adjustability: Devices with adjustable frequencies are suitable for more extensive training. They are also a good buy if you are uncertain what sound level works best for your dog.
  • Durability: Select a device that is durable enough to withstand falls, spills and general wear and tear.
  • Accessories: Lanyards, keychain rings and wrist straps are practical accompaniments that reduce the likelihood of misplacing your whistle.
  • Price: There are inexpensive whistles that function well but are not as durable. If you do not require longevity, purchase a cheaper device with the right sound and accessories.

FAQs

Q: Why do training whistles work?

A: There are two main categories of training whistles; audible ones that both people and dogs can hear and inaudible ones that seem to be silent, but in actuality, they discharge a sound frequency that is too high for the human ear to perceive, but dogs can. Dogs can hear frequencies at least three times higher than humans. They respond to sound, so verbal commands, clickers and whistles are effective for training. Whistles, especially inaudible ones, are the least exhausting training tool for instructors and are the least irritating to people around them. You can alter the frequency of some whistles to distinguish between various commands, and dogs are highly receptive to the changes and can associate each sound with its respective instruction.

Q: Can whistles hurt dogs’ ears?

A: Even though dogs and people have different tolerance levels for sound, you can understand their sensitivity by observing yours. If someone blows a whistle at a distance, you hear it, but it doesn’t hurt your ears. However, the noise can be downright painful if they blow the same whistle at full blast right next to you, especially for an extended period. The same is true for dogs as well. There are correct ways to blow training whistles, so read the instructions carefully before using them around dogs. Consult your veterinarian or a professional trainer if you are still uncertain.
