Buying Guide

The ideal treat doesn't just trigger your hamster's excitement but provides added nutritional value for their diet. When selecting their goodies, keep the following in mind:

  • Low in sugar, fat, and citric acid: Avoid unhealthy food and always choose the best and healthiest treats. Always keep their snack intake to ten percent of their diet. Excessive sugar can spike their cholesterol, which isn't good for their health. Avoid yoghurt products or honey snacks; otherwise, a surge in glucose in their diet could cause diarrhoea, especially with dwarf hamsters. Avoid too many treats that include sweet fruits in their diet. Similarly, although your pets enjoy it, don't feed them large amounts of citrus fruit such as lime, lemon, grapefruit, and other citric acidic contents because it can hurt your pet's tummy.
  • Protein Content: The ideal protein content for a hamster is between twelve and fourteen per cent and between three to six per cent fat. A pregnant hamster who is lactating should have more protein in its diet. So, if your hamster is breeding, look for treats that provide 18% to 40% protein and 7% to 9% fat. Babies and breeding hamsters require higher protein for healthy growth and development. Healthy treats should have high protein content but are low in fat.
  • Type: Treats can take multiple forms. They can come in grains, sticks, bars, etc. Some treats, such as chew sticks, are great for nibbling and dental hygiene. Some treats come in tiny grains or cereal-like flakes that are ideal for one-time use, while others come as baked grains in storage-safe packaging. These are usually ideal for foraging.
  • Storage: Check the content directions to ensure that you can store the treat appropriately. Storing treats badly can lead to spoilage and illness in your pet.

FAQ

Q: Why are hamster treats beneficial?

A: Your hamster has a solid nibbling instinct. When the impulse strikes, it will gnaw on your furnishings, clothes, and whatever else they could get their tiny paws on. Treats may assist here. They provide your pet with a snack to satisfy their excessive urge. Your hamster can often suffer from a case of boredom. In the wild, they have a large area to explore. Cramped spaces might be depressing. Treats can make your relationship grow closer while giving them something more to look forward to during your time together. You can understand this if you've ever watched your hamster cram their cheeks with food for later. These small sweets also have the benefit of enhancing oral health. Plaque or tartar buildup in their teeth can cause long-term problems. Treats also aid their exercise needs and can add to their nutritional diet because of their fibre content.

Q: What kinds of toys should I get for my hamster?

A: To prevent boredom, your hamster needs enrichment. Some products, like chew sticks, wooden knick knacks, or teeth-grinding blocks, are simple to produce yourself, but others require purchases from a reputable brand. When building your hamster cage, consider including tunnels and hanging bridges they can climb on and burrow. Hours of entertainment await your hamster as it tries to open toilet paper tubes by folding on the ends to reach the treats inside.  Toys aren't only great for keeping them amused and having fun. They also help minimise depression and some health concerns that can develop underactive hamsters. Hamsters must regularly chew to keep their teeth from getting overly long. Your hamster may chew on the cage bars if it becomes boring. Which can cause your little companion to injure their teeth if you don't add safe toys and treats to their daily routine.
