Buying Guide

Unless you already have experienced a robot vacuum, you’re probably in some new territory. There are a lot of features and functions on these rechargeable, automated units that you may not be aware of. While you’re reading up on your options in robot vacs for pet hair, here are some important considerations to keep in mind while you collect the facts and prepare to make your decision:

  • Control: Programming your robot vacuum is possible through different means, and these depend on the product specifications. Some robot vacs come with a remote control, while you can control others through a smartphone app. On some models, you can even use Alexa or Google Assistant to give voice commands that direct your robot vacuum.

  • Cleaning: Pet hair and debris from your floor collect in a bin inside the unit, and usually bags are not required. The bin requires emptying, and the frequency of emptying needed depends obviously, to the size of the bin. Some robot vac models, however, have a feature of self-emptying into a larger compartment in the charging dock of the unit.

  • Operation: Robot vacs operate through sensors that pick up obstacles, and most have a “cliff detection” feature as well that will keep your vacuum from falling down the stairs. Between different brands and models, there is a wide range of functional abilities. For example, some robot vacs randomly go about the space, and often go over the same spots more than once. Other robot vacs, though, run in a more organized pattern and move according to computerized room maps stored in memory.

FAQs

Q: Where can robot vacuums clean?

A: Robot vacuums can all pick up pet hair and other debris from hard floors, and many models can also clean rugs and carpet, too. Depending on the robot vacuum model, some are best on hard floors, others function well on both hard floors and low pile carpet, and still other robot vacuums can handle even higher pile carpets, too. Check the seller’s or manufacturer’s description for details about each particular robot vac’s capabilities.

Q: How long can robot vacuums run for?

A: Since robot vacuums run on rechargeable batteries, they vary in their individual runtimes. Also, many vacuums have different power modes, and will not last as long as the manufacturer claims if used with full suction mode, such as on carpet, which requires more power. Generally, robot vacuums hold enough charge to operate from 15 to 20 minutes ‌to more than an hour on lower power modes.
